Yoga-karakas (mutual co-workers)

By Yoga-karaka is usually meant a graha that produces favorable effects in a horoscope. The most famous such case is when a planet rules simultaneously kendra and trikona houses, which is possible for some ascendants (e.g. Mars for Cancer lagna rules 10 and 5th houses and is therefore a Yoga-karaka). However, there is another possible scenario of Yoga-karaka planets, which, although rarely mentioned by modern astrologers, is a simple and powerful prediction technique explained by maharishi Parashara. It occurs when grahas that are situated either in their exaltation signs, own signs (including moolatrikona) or natural friendly signs are simultaneously located in angles from each other. By angles here are meant two kinds of position: opposite (1-7 or 180 degrees apart) houses and 4-10 houses (90 degrees apart).

Here is an example of such positions:

In this chart we can see 5 planets located 4 houses apart at an angle from each other: Saturn and Moon in the sign of Aquarius and Sun, Mars and Mercury in the sign of Scorpio. But of these 5 grahas only 3 can be considered Yoga-karakas in this particular chart: Saturn (since it is in its own sign), Sun (in the sign of its friend Mars) and Mars (in its own sign). For Mercury and Moon, Scorpio and Aquarius are not their respective friendly signs, hence they can not be considered Yoga-karakas, even though they are situated in angles relative to each other.

The next sample chart also has 3 Yoga-karakas: Mars and Moon in Leo (a friendly sign for both of them) and Saturn in Aquarius, but unlike in previous example, both Mars and Moon are in the opposite house relative to Saturn. Venus can not be a Yoga-karaka here, because it is in an inimical sign.

Planets that are Yoga-karakas in any given chart can be in any house relative to the ascendant, but as long as they meet aforementioned criteria they still should be considered as such. However, when such grahas are also in angles not only from each other but also from ascendant itself, it makes them even more powerful. The most powerful in that case would be Yoga-karaka in the 10th house from lagna. The meaning behind this concept is that being in angle from each other grahas act as co-workers, creating a foundation in native’s life, because kendra (angular) houses are fundamental corners of our lives, since 1St house represents Self, 4th – inner peace and home, 7th – other people, business, spouse, 10th – our deeds in the world, profession etc. And being simultaneously strong sign-wise such grahas show a high level of consciousness relative to their significations. As a result individuals, who have Yoga-karakas in their birth charts tend to have a good amount of comforts, wealth etc. in their lives. It is important to take into consideration in which houses relative to the ascendant these Yoga-karakas are located, as it shifts the focus to those houses. For example, a Yoga-karaka in the 5th house (despite it not being a kendra house) can bless a native with a high level of intelligence and\or position in a society. Knowing this concept, you can quickly identify Yoga-karakas (if there are any) in a chart and see which areas of life will have their support and blessings, thus creating a foundation in a person’s life. Simple, yet a very effective technique.
